Wholesome Green Smoothie

2 cups plain almond milk

1 handful fresh baby spinach

1/4 cup fresh basil

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1/4 avocado

1 kiwi, peeled

1/2 cup fresh strawberries

1/2 cup frozen mango

If you are using a powerful blender, add all ingredients and give it a whir. Otherwise, for a basic blender, start with the almond milk, spinach and basil. Blend until completely liquefied. Toss in the chia seeds, avocado, kiwi and strawberries. Blend well. Finish up by adding the frozen mango, blending until smooth. Makes two servings.

The greens in this smoothie give your body the detox it needs after a long winter. Almond milk is a healthy, dairy free alternative. However, if you are allergic to nuts, you can substitute coconut water, hemp milk or rice milk. Chia seeds add necessary protein and minerals, while avocado gives your body healthy fats needed for the absorption of the vitamins in the other ingredients. A blend of fresh and frozen fruits add the sweetness and consistency you need without the use of added sugars or ice, which waters down a smoothie.
