Two Natural Fly Repellants Enhance Outdoor Dining

Outdoor barbecuing season is here. It's time to grab your tongs and get ready for the fun! Don't put up with pesky flies, though. Repel them with two of our favorite natural mixtures that are healthy and safe for all your guests.

Spray Away

While this spray has a strong odor at first, it quickly fades as the natural fly repellant dries. Use it on all your exposed skin and even on your pets.

To make this spray repellant, mix the following ingredients in a clean spray bottle.

  • 1/2 cup witch hazel

  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 30-50 drops of essential oils, any combination including cajeput, catnip, cedar, citronella, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, lemongrass, mint, rosemary or tea tree.

Diffuse Away

If wearing a fly repellant spray isn't your thing, naturally diffuse the flies away. You simply need a small tin can with a lid and a clean cloth or sponge. Then combine the following ingredients in the tin:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 tablespoons witch hazel or vodka

  • 100 drops of citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint or other essential oils

Place the cloth or sponge inside the tin, close the lid and wait 24 hours. When you open the tin, the aroma will repel flies. When you're finished, replace the lid. After a few uses, you'll need to replenish the essential oils or mix a new batch as you diffuse the flies away.

Before your next outdoor dinner, create one of these natural fly repellants. Which one will you try first?
